It’s the “little things”!
If December snuck up on your club this year (it happens to everyone!), you can still make a meaningful impact before the holidays. These five quick, low-lift service ideas are perfect for volunteer-led organizations like Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, Optimist, Exchange Clubs, and other community service groups.
Each idea is simple to organize, easy to explain at your next meeting, and doesn’t require weeks of planning. They’re also great for engaging members who want to help but are juggling busy end-of-year schedules. (A quick club-wide email or MemberChat post is usually all the organizing these need.)
1. Canned good minute
Ask each member to bring one canned item to the next meeting. Drop off at your local food pantry.
Quick variation: If your club runs “Happy Bucks,” let members “pay” with a can of food instead of a dollar this week.
2. Warm hands & hearts drive
Collect new mittens, gloves, hats, socks, or scarves. Deliver them to schools, shelters, or social workers serving local families.
Why it works: Warm items are always needed, and this feels personal and heartfelt — perfect for holiday giving.
3. Kindness notes for seniors
Have members write short, encouraging notes to seniors in nursing homes, assisted living, or Meals on Wheels clients — this could be a 10-minute activity at the next meeting!
Tip: You only need a few minutes during a meeting. Provide a pile of note cards, pens, and a list of first names.
4. “Surprise the teachers” basket
Create a simple appreciation basket for a local school — coffee pods, granola bars, tissues, hand sanitizer, sticky notes, or chocolate.
Delivery idea: Drop it off with a note from your club saying, “Thank you for caring for our community’s children.”
5. Grocery tote food kits
Ask members to fill a small reusable tote with 3–5 staple pantry items. Deliver to a domestic violence shelter, homeless outreach team, or family resource center.
Popular items: Pasta, sauce, rice, canned vegetables, oatmeal, peanut butter (and jelly), shelf-stable milk.
Small actions make a big impact
Service doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. Even in the last weeks of December, your club can brighten someone’s holiday season with simple, heartfelt acts of kindness.
